Can a Wix Website Really Rank on Google? Here’s the Data.

There’s a running joke in the web design world that “real” businesses use WordPress and everyone else uses Wix.
And honestly? It’s outdated.
Wix has come a long way in the past few years. From its early drag-and-drop days (remember those clunky editor boxes?) to now offering advanced SEO features, schema markup, app integrations, and lightning-fast hosting — it’s evolved into a powerful platform that can absolutely compete.
So why does this myth still exist?
Because people are repeating advice they heard in 2016. Or they’re basing opinions on their DIY site that hasn’t been touched since launch.
Let’s set the record straight.
In this blog:

Spoiler: Wix Can Rank — We’ve Got the Proof
At KN Creative, I’ve worked with dozens of small business owners on Wix who wanted to grow their reach and attract more qualified leads — without rebuilding their site from scratch.
We optimized their sites using:
Strong on-page SEO (title tags, meta descriptions, header hierarchy)
Structured internal linking
Geo-targeted keywords
Fresh blog or FAQ content
Google Business Profile integration
And you know what happened?
✔️ Rankings improved.
✔️ Traffic increased.
✔️ Leads started rolling in — not from ads, but from search.
One of my clients, a mobile detailing service in southwestern Ontario, saw their homepage rise to the top 3 on Google Maps and organic search within 90 days — all on Wix..
Another, a local therapist offering virtual sessions across Ontario, went from zero search traffic to booking weekly consultations through organic search alone.
What Wix Offers for SEO (That Most People Don’t Use)
Wix now includes built-in tools that help you optimize your site without needing a tech degree. Some of the features I use with clients include:
Custom title tags + meta descriptions for every page
Header structure (H1, H2, etc.) to keep Google happy
301 redirects so no traffic gets lost when URLs change
SEO Patterns that automate meta data across blog posts or collections
Image compression + alt text editing
Integrated schema markup for events, services, and more
Google Search Console + Analytics integration built right in
Server-side rendering (SSR) for faster indexing
Lightning-fast global hosting via CDN
In other words: Wix isn’t the problem. Not using these features is.
What We Tested (and Why It Matters)

We recently ran a side-by-side comparison of 12 small business websites in similar service industries. Six were built on Wix, the other six on WordPress.
Here’s what we looked at:
Indexed pages in Google
Top 10 keyword rankings
Page speed
Technical SEO errors
Domain authority (DA) growth over 6 months
Lead conversion from organic search
The result?
Wix sites held their own.
No major SEO disadvantage.
Most success came down to content + consistency.
The WordPress sites didn’t automatically rank better. In fact, some of them had worse bounce rates and broken plugins slowing them down.
Common Mistakes That Cause SEO Struggles on Wix
So if you’re on Wix and not seeing results, don’t panic. It’s likely not the platform — it’s how it’s set up.
Here are the most common issues I see when auditing Wix sites:
Homepage has no H1 tag or confusing header order
Title tags default to “Home | My Site” 🤦♀️
Pages missing meta descriptions
Images uploaded without compression or alt text
No keyword research behind the copy
Outdated links or hidden mobile elements
No internal links between key pages
Services not described clearly enough for Google to understand
Good news? These are all fixable — without rebuilding from scratch
So, What Should You Do Instead?

Here’s a simple roadmap to improve your SEO on Wix without spiraling into a black hole of Google tutorials.
1. Update Your Page Titles + Meta Descriptions
Every page should have:
A clear, relevant title (including your main keyword)
A meta description that gives people a reason to click
Example:
❌ “Home | My Site”
✅ “Luxury Mobile Detailing in Hamilton | Chambers of Detailing”
2. Use Headers Properly
Use one H1 per page (typically your main title), followed by H2s and H3s for sections. This helps Google understand what your page is about.
3. Write for Humans First, Search Engines Second
Use natural language that reflects how your clients search. “Therapy for anxiety in Toronto” will do more for you than “holistic journey of mindful wellbeing.”
4. Create Helpful, Evergreen Content
This could be:
FAQs that answer client concerns
Blog posts that target local search
Service pages that describe what you actually do
5. Set Up Google Tools
Connect your Wix site to:
Google Search Console (to monitor indexing + errors)
Google Analytics (to track traffic + behaviour)
Google Business Profile (to show up in Maps)
Real Talk: It’s Not the Platform, It’s the Strategy
If you’re on Wix and you’re not seeing the SEO results you want, please know this:
It’s not because Wix “can’t rank.”It’s because most small biz owners never learned how to set it up for ranking.
And honestly, that’s not your fault. You’ve got a business to run — not a degree in metadata.
But if you do want to start showing up when people search for what you offer? It’s totally doable — and I can help.
